EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Board of Commissioners of the Southside Planning District Commission (SPDC) located in South Hill, Virginia is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader for the position of Executive Director.
The SPDC, one of 21 planning district commissions across the Commonwealth of Virginia, serves Brunswick, Halifax and Mecklenburg Counties and the Towns of South Boston and South Hill. The primary objective of the Southside Planning District Commission is to promote the orderly and efficient development of the economic, physical and social fabric of this rural region by assisting local governmental units in developing policies, programs and projects which directly impact the region’s economic, physical and social needs.
The Executive Director will lead the work of the SPDC, providing strong leadership and support to the SPDC Board, its members, and staff. This position will develop relationships with localities and community stakeholders that initiate and maintain regional programs and revenue sources for the SPDC. Under the general direction of the SPDC Board, this position will promote positive and sustainable local government cooperation throughout its member region. The Executive Director, in consultation and collaboration with the Board, shall dedicate him/herself to originating, identifying and capitalizing on opportunities to form, facilitate and enhance local and regional partnerships. Candidates must have comprehensive knowledge of grant programs to identify and pursue funding opportunities to meet a variety of local government needs.
An ideal candidate for the Executive Director position will be a well-rounded, proven executive who- 1) has thorough knowledge in the fields of planning, grantsmanship and community/economic development and understands the principles/practices of intergovernmental relations and public administration; 2) has the ability and experience to direct and supervise a staff of professional employees and administrative personnel; 3) possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills; 4) understands the functions of local, state and federal government; 5) has the ability to build consensus among officials and partners to further the mission of the Commission and its member governments; and 6) possesses the knowledge and understanding of regionalism and the ability to work regionally.
Interested candidates must be a graduate of an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, public administration, urban & regional planning or closely related field that is supplemented by ten (10) to fifteen (15) years previous experience that includes public administration with local governments and state agency experience. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
Compensation for the position will be competitive based on qualifications and experience.
