We are Hiring a GIS Technician!

Southside Planning District Commission is seeking applications from qualified candidates to serve as our next GIS Technician. This position uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools, data, and knowledge to assist in providing GIS technical services to the member localities of the Southside Planning District. This includes providing direct GIS assistance to 911 centers in the area of 911 addressing, Computer Aided Dispatch updates, Next-Gen 911 administration, emergency zone maintenance, and other GIS functions as needed. The GIS Technician will also assist with tax parcel editing, online GIS site administration, and provide GIS and mapping assistance to SPDC staff. The GIS Technician works under the supervision of the Director of Local Services, and/or the Executive Director.

Essential Job Tasks

  • Create, maintain, and update reference GIS layers, typically in a pre-existing geodatabase model
  • Acquire GIS data from reputable sources to satisfy project requirements
  • Provide timely data/map updates to local 911 centers' CAD software as well as other 911-related systems such as Next-Gen 911
  • 911 addressing management, including communication with citizens regarding addressing issues and questions
  • Tax Parcel editing using survey plats
  • Work with local town managers, county economic development personnel, and other local government representatives to satisfy their GIS needs
  • Produce maps and GIS data for SPDC staff as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed under the supervision of the SPDC Director of Local Services, and or the Executive Director.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently with respect to schedules, deadlines and budgetary constraints
  • Knowledge of basic cartographic conventions used in making visually pleasing maps
  • Fundamental understanding of ESRI-based GIS concepts including the geodatabase, map layering, labeling, and selecting/querying data
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Pro
  • Ability to read and understand survey plats and deeds
  • Understanding of the Windows operating system, file operations, and basic PC usage
  • Demonstrate strong attention to accuracy and precision when creating or updating GIS data and maps

Required Education and Experience

A Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information System or a related program, or adequate experience needed to fulfill the job tasks noted above.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

Work is typically performed at the Commission office located in the Town of South Hill.  However, position responsibilities also require periodic travel to the region’s 3 counties and 12 towns and occasional out of area trips. Other physical efforts include, but not limited to, computer operation, sitting, speaking, writing, listening, operating a motor vehicle, and lifting up to 25 pounds.  Regular contacts are made with Commission staff, County and Town officials, State/Federal Agencies and the public.

The salary for the position is negotiable depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The Commission offers an excellent and competitive benefits package.
