Mecklenburg County

In May 2012, the Mecklenburg Correctional Center was closed by the Department of Corrections (DOC), resulting in the loss of 300 jobs in the County and over $200,000 in water and sewer fee revenues for the Town of Boydton. In January 2013, the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission (TICR) awarded the County an Economic Development grant in the amount of $180,000 to perform environmental and engineering studies. The DOC did not complete demolition of the site until the spring of 2017. The Phase I ESA was completed by May, 2017, and the Phase II ESA is scheduled to be complete by November 2017. Engineering studies will be performed once the DOC commits to site remediation.
