Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan
The Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan is being developed to help reduce physical and economic losses in the wake of a natural disaster, by encouraging proactive mitigation strategies. An example of a mitigation strategy would be relocating a community from a flood plain to higher ground, so that flooding is no longer a threat. The Plan must be approved by the Counties and FEMA. It consists of two parts, a Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) and the Mitigation Strategy. The HIRA discusses past natural events, and provides information on the location and frequency of future natural events, as well as loss estimation. The Mitigation Strategy identifies possible actions that can be undertaken by towns and counties in the District, to reduce losses from natural disasters.
