Southside Planning District - Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan

SPDC staff, with the guidance and assistance of local emergency personnel and town/county management, are currently developing a regional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan. The Plan, conforming to the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA2K), addresses the mitigation of risk to life and property, for natural events such as hurricanes, floods, and winter storms. Mitigation is defined as any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to life and property from a hazard. Mitigation measures can include elevation of homes in flood zones, shutters on windows to protect against high winds, and building/zoning changes. <Click here for more information, and to download the Plan>

Once completed, the center will provide training in MIG welding, tool and die, metal fabrication, machining, millwright training, pipe fitter training, and other training that has been identified by local industry as greatly needed for the existing workforce. The project is nearing completion, with only the parking area needing finishing. Classes in welding, machinery, and electronics should begin in the fall.
