Note: Pay particular attention to the margins of error (MOE) for the towns. The ACS is less accurate for small geographies such as towns, and more accurate for larger geographies like counties and states. The Census 2000 data also was a sample that had MOE (that were not published). ACS MOE are typically 1.75 times larger than the MOE from Census 2000.

About the data sources:

1990, 2000, and 2010 Census contain 100% population counts. The 1990 and 2000 Census also contain sample data on income, transportation, etc. that was collected using the "long form". In 2010 the "long form" was discontinued in favor of the American Community Survey.

Weldon Cooper estimates are used by most Virginia agencies for population since the most recent Census. Weldon Cooper data incorporates Virginia records such as births and deaths.

Census Estimates are the US official estimate of population.

American Community Survey is a sample survey over 1, 3 or 5 years used to determine demographic data that used to be obtained every 10 years on the Census long form. The primary use of ACS data is for social characteristics rather than population and housing counts. (See Census Estimates or Weldon Cooper Estimates for population estimates.) For a good description of the difference in the 2000 Census sample data and the American Community Survey, please see this page: http://www.cubitplanning.com/blog/2010/08/american-community-survey-vs-decennial-census-whats-the-difference/
